In a bid to combat maternal and infant mortality, the Rotary Club of Oxbow Lake, in collaboration with partner organizations, recently presented Maternity (Birthing) kits to 30 pregnant women and nursing mothers at the Agudama-Epie Community Primary Healthcare Center (PHC) in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State.
To ensure the effectiveness of the donation, the Humanitarian Club, together with the Rotaract Club of Oxbow Lake, the Rotaract Club of BYCOTECH, and the Rotaract Club of the Bayelsa Medical University (BMU), provided Health Talks during the women’s antenatal period at the Health Center.
The initiative, led by Rotarian Douye Lorretta Indiamaowei, the Club’s Director of Polioplus and a Medical Doctor, was carried out to mark the Rotary International Maternal and Child Health Month, which runs through the entirety of July every Rotary year.
Dr. Hilda Afakwu-Adimoha, the immediate past President of the club, explained that the project aims to support pregnant women and nursing mothers facing the pressures of the country’s current economic situation, in line with Rotary’s theme for 2023-2024, “Create Hope in the World.”
The recipients and staff at the Agudama-Epie Primary Healthcare Center expressed their gratitude to the Rotarians for selecting them for this year’s edition of the initiative, which aims to prevent Maternal and Infant Mortality.
According to Rtn Fortune Alfred, the Appreciator President of the Club, this project represents just one of the club’s areas of focus. The Rotary Club of Oxbow Lake is dedicated to executing projects in all seven Rotary areas of focus, including promoting peace, fighting disease, supporting education, growing the local economy, protecting the environment, and emergency response.
Alfred further mentioned that the upcoming Installation event on August 12, 2023, will formally install the Club’s Board of Directors for the 2023/2024 Rotary year with the theme “Create Hope in the World.” The event aims to raise funds for Prostate Cancer Awareness and Screening, Mental Health Awareness, the continuation of the construction of a Botanical Garden at Niger Delta University, the establishment of a Food Bank for Post-Flood Relief, supporting small businesses in the community, providing targeted educational support for students, the production and distribution of reusable sanitary pads, and the planting of economic trees for environmental protection, among other initiatives.
The Rotary Club of Oxbow Lake has a proven track record of community projects, including providing portable water to 1,200 households in five communities in the Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. They have also undertaken projects to improve sanitation and access to clean water in schools and towns across the region.
With their dedication to various causes, the Rotary Club of Oxbow Lake continues to make a positive impact in Bayelsa, Nigeria, and beyond. Their efforts to improve maternal and child health stand as a testament to their commitment to creating hope and fostering positive change in the world.
