In a recent development, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) President, Uche Rowland Ojinmah, has issued a stern warning to fellow doctors, urging them to exercise caution when considering strikes as a means of addressing their grievances. The President emphasized the need for healthcare professionals to show restraint and seek alternative solutions to issues with the government, rather than resorting to strikes.
The message was conveyed by President Ojinmah during a press briefing held after the national executive council (NEC) meeting of the NMA in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.
A Focus on Progressive Healthcare
President Ojinmah reiterated his commitment to fostering a progressive consensus within the healthcare sector for its improvement. He highlighted the importance of working collaboratively to build a better healthcare system in Nigeria.
Acknowledging Government Support
The NMA leader also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for recent positive developments in the healthcare sector. He specifically commended President Tinubu for the substantial salary increase for medical professionals and for appointing medical experts to the Federal Executive Council (FEC).
President Ojinmah stated, “We thank President Bola Tinubu for the huge confidence in the medical profession by populating the Federal Executive Council with medical professionals. We are certain these our ambassadors at the FEC will excel.”
He further extended congratulations to colleagues who had been appointed to key healthcare positions, including the Minister of Health, Professor Ali Pate, and the Minister of State for Health.
Appeal for Unity and Collaboration
In his address, President Ojinmah called upon healthcare professionals from various backgrounds to set aside their differences and work together in the interest of a more robust healthcare sector. He emphasized the NMA’s dedication to building a consensus that would lead to positive developments within the healthcare system.
Salary Review and Demands
The NMA also expressed appreciation for the recent salary review of medical professionals, noting that the agreement reached was finalized before the fuel subsidy removal and associated price increases. The NEC has directed its national officers to liaise with the government for a fresh proposal on allowances. Furthermore, while awaiting the implementation of the new minimum wage and consequential adjustment, Ojinmah urged the government to seamlessly enact these changes to avoid prolonged disputes.
In a significant directive, the NEC called upon the NMA Cross River State branch to persist in their efforts to secure the release of their abducted colleague, Ekanem Philip-Ephraim. He has been in captivity for over a month, and the NMA strongly implores the Cross River State government to intensify its efforts to secure his release.
By advocating for restraint and cooperation within the medical community, the NMA aims to create a stronger, more progressive healthcare sector for the benefit of all Nigerians.
