In a significant development, President Bola Tinubu has given his nod to the appointment of Prof. John Okeniyi as the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the esteemed Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, located in Ile-Ife, Osun State. This announcement, disclosed through a press statement, bears immense implications for the institution and healthcare in the region.
A Four-Year Tenure Begins
Prof. John Okeniyi’s appointment comes with an initial term of four years, officially commencing on August 24, 2023. The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare conveyed this crucial decision through a press statement issued by its Director of Information, Patricia Deworitshe.
Responsibilities and Expectations
During the formal presentation of the appointment letter, Daju Kachollom, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, acted on behalf of the Coordinating Minister of Health, Prof. Ali Pate. In doing so, he underscored the weighty responsibilities that come with the role of Chief Medical Director. He emphasized the high expectations of the Nigerian people regarding the healthcare delivery system.
Kachollom stated, “It is expected that you will work collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure that the Hospital continues to deliver quality healthcare services to our people.”

Prof. John Okeniyi, in expressing his gratitude for the trust bestowed upon him by the Federal Government, made a solemn pledge. He affirmed his dedication to uprightness and diligence in executing his new responsibilities. Okeniyi’s commitment aligns with the overarching “renewed hope agenda” of the current administration.
He stated, “I promise that I will not disappoint Mr. President and the Ministry of Health. I will work in collaboration and harmony with all stakeholders, and look into the welfare of staff of the hospital. I will also do my best to ensure that the incessant internal crisis at the hospital will be brought to an end.”
