ExxonMobil’s Power Forward Program Trains 8,000 Public Health Advocates

ExxonMobil, in its ongoing effort to cultivate a culture of public health awareness among Nigerian youth, is celebrating a significant milestone. Through its impactful Power Forward program, ExxonMobil has successfully nurtured and empowered over 8,000 malaria champions and public health advocates.

For nearly a decade, the Power Forward youth development initiative has played a pivotal role in shaping the lives of young Nigerians. By offering a blend of life skills training, public health education seminars, malaria prevention workshops, and basketball development programs, this initiative has reached an astonishing 250,000 boys and girls across 40 schools in the Abuja region since its inception in 2013.

This year’s edition of the program featured an exciting basketball tournament spanning from June to September. It attracted 30 boys’ teams and 12 girls’ teams, with the top-performing eight girls’ teams and ten boys’ teams progressing to the playoffs. The ultimate goal is to crown the top two girls’ and boys’ teams as champions in the Power Forward Finals.

Alvin Abraham, President of the ExxonMobil Foundation, expressed the organization’s dedication to youth development through a multifaceted approach. “Over the past decade, our partnership with NBA Africa and PanAfricare on the Power Forward initiative has promoted youth development through sports, life skills, and public health education,” Abraham stated.

Gbemisola Abudu, NBA Africa Vice President and Country Head of Nigeria, highlighted the substantial impact of the program. “The Power Forward initiative has benefited more than 250,000 young Nigerians, empowering them with leadership skills that will contribute to a brighter future for Nigeria,” Abudu emphasized.

Dr. Patrick Adah, Country Director for PanAfricare Nigeria, marked the 10th anniversary of Power Forward by highlighting its remarkable achievements. He noted, “In its 10th year, Power Forward has played a pivotal role in raising over 8,000 malaria champions and public health advocates.”

ExxonMobil’s commitment to fostering youth development, public health awareness, and community engagement through the Power Forward program exemplifies its dedication to making a lasting positive impact on Nigerian society. As this initiative continues to thrive, it not only transforms individual lives but also strengthens the fabric of the community and contributes to the nation’s brighter future.
