NAFDAC and NIMR Join Forces with Xcene Research to Revolutionize Clinical Studies in Nigeria

Collaboration aims to transform the clinical research sector, improve healthcare delivery, and streamline regulatory processes.

In a groundbreaking move, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) have forged a strategic partnership with Xcene Research, a prominent contract research organization (CRO), to usher in a new era for clinical studies in Nigeria.

Deputy Director of NAFDAC, Dr. Beno Nyam Yakubu, and Senior Researcher at NIMR, Dr. Nneka Onyejepu, shared insights in exclusive interviews with PUNCH HealthWise. Both emphasized the significance of collaboration between health regulatory agencies and research institutions to drive positive transformation in the clinical research sector, ultimately enhancing healthcare delivery across the nation.

The collaboration comes ahead of the 2023 Impact Africa Summit, a pharmaceutical research and clinical trial summit scheduled to take place from December 1-3 in Lagos. NAFDAC and NIMR are active participants in this pivotal event.

Dr. Yakubu affirmed NAFDAC’s unwavering support for partnerships and collaborations aimed at revitalizing the clinical trial sector in Nigeria. He highlighted the proactive approach of Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of NAFDAC, in streamlining regulatory processes to ensure the success of the transformative project.

According to Dr. Yakubu, the initiative includes creating a streamlined online platform for regulatory approvals, fostering a conducive environment for contract research organizations (CROs) to conduct clinical trials in Nigeria. The objective is to establish a centralized system where applicants can obtain ethical and regulatory clearances efficiently.

Dr. Onyejepu from NIMR echoed the sentiments of collaboration, emphasizing the urgent need to transform the clinical research landscape in Nigeria. She commended Xcene Research for fostering collaboration among key stakeholders, including NAFDAC, a regulatory body, NIMR, a research institution, and other partners.

Xcene Research’s Executive Director, Adebukunola Telufusi, highlighted the transformative impact expected from the Impact Africa Summit. She emphasized that the summit, led by thought leaders and experts, aims to change the narrative of clinical research not only in Nigeria but across West Africa. Over 20 experts are set to share insights on transforming the clinical research sector and fostering dialogue to eliminate health inequity in Africa through collaboration.

The summit stands as a crucial platform for driving change, with stakeholders actively engaged in discussions and collaborations that have the potential to shape the future of clinical studies in Nigeria and beyond.
