The Lions Club International, District 404-A2, Nigeria, Abuja Central, has embarked on a remarkable journey to uplift communities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by allocating a substantial sum of N20,400,000 for various humanitarian projects. These projects are set to address pressing healthcare needs and youth empowerment, showcasing the club’s commitment to service and community support.
A Multifaceted Approach to Healthcare
Under the leadership of Hon. Oscar Ehirim, who recently assumed the role of the 9th President of the Abuja Central Lions, a series of healthcare initiatives have been outlined to positively impact the lives of FCT residents. These include:
1. A State-of-the-Art Medical Laboratory: The club has pledged N15,000,000 for the establishment of a medical laboratory in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC). This facility is expected to enhance access to quality healthcare services and diagnostics for the community.
2. Lions Eye Care Hospital Support: The Lions Club will contribute N500,000 towards the ongoing construction of the Lions Eye Care Hospital in Abuja, a significant endeavor aimed at addressing eye-related health issues.
3. Cornea Transplants: Over N2,000,000 has been allocated for cornea transplants for five visually impaired individuals, providing them with a chance to regain their sight and improve their quality of life.
4. Youth Empowerment: Recognizing the importance of empowering young graduates and the unemployed, the club will invest N1,000,000 in youth empowerment programs and seminars, fostering skill development and economic opportunities.
5. Vision and Diabetes Care: Abuja Central Lions will conduct free eye screenings, providing eyeglasses to 200 visually impaired individuals. Additionally, N900,000 will be dedicated to free diabetes screenings and medication distribution, addressing critical healthcare concerns in the community.
6. Healthcare Awareness: The club aims to enlighten the community about pediatric cancer prevention, adopting a proactive medical approach to curbing its rise. Furthermore, they will extend their support by donating food and relief materials to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.
A Call for Support
President Ehirim encourages community members and well-wishers to join hands in this noble cause. Their support will significantly impact the success of these humanitarian projects, fostering a sense of unity and service among the residents of the FCT.
He emphasizes the altruistic spirit of the Abuja Central Lions, stating, “I will encourage us to be service-minded, without any expectation of gratification, but to serve with the heart of great Lions that we are. I hope we all come together to deliver humanitarian services to the less privileged and our immediate community. We, therefore, crave your support to donate as you can towards these projects, and the Almighty will reward you for these kind acts towards supporting the needy.”
In her valedictory speech, the immediate past President, Lion Joy Peace Okoh, highlighted the club’s successful humanitarian initiatives and emphasized that these projects were meticulously executed based on community needs assessments.
The Abuja Central Lions’ commitment to healthcare and community development is a shining example of how service organizations can make a profound impact on the lives of those in need. With the support of the community, their vision for a healthier and more empowered FCT can become a reality.
