Enugu State Resident Doctors Issue 14-Day Ultimatum for Increased Doctor Employment

The Association of Resident Doctors in the Enugu State University of Science and Technology Teaching Hospital (ESUTH) has delivered a decisive ultimatum, giving the Enugu State Government 14 days to address critical concerns regarding the employment of more doctors and the assurance of security measures.

The ultimatum was formally communicated through a communique issued at the conclusion of an emergency General Meeting held at ESUT Teaching Hospital over the weekend. The document was jointly signed by the President of ARD-ESUT, Dr. Chukwunonso Ofonere, and its Secretary-General, Dr. Ikemefuna Nnamani.

In a stern statement, the association urged both the ESUTH management and the Enugu State Government to declare a state of emergency concerning the employment of doctors within the hospital. The communique emphasized that the clock was ticking, given the 120-day gap since the government, via the Secretary to the State Government, promised the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) employment opportunities for medical officers and resident doctors. Surprisingly, no official advertisements or tangible actions have been taken in this regard.

Additionally, the statement revealed insights into the management’s purported plans to enhance the safety of doctors and other healthcare workers within the hospital.

The EGM underscored its commitment to the cause by extending the initial 14-day ultimatum by an additional 14 days, culminating on December 1.

The key points outlined in the statement included:

  1. Declaration of a State of Emergency
    • Urgent approval for the recruitment of medical officers, resident doctors, and house officers.
  2. Focus on Critical Departments
    • Prioritization of recruitment in essential departments such as Accident and Emergency, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics, and Gynaecology.

As the Enugu State Resident Doctors stand firm on their ultimatum, the ball is now in the court of the state authorities to address these critical healthcare concerns within the stipulated timeframe. The outcome of this ultimatum will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications for the healthcare landscape in Enugu State. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
