First Lady Oluremi Tinubu advocates for Mental Health Awareness on World Mental Health Day

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has called upon fellow Nigerians to place an increased emphasis on their mental well-being, particularly in the face of the societal pressures and challenges posed by social media. This heartfelt message was conveyed via a post on her official X platform, to mark the World Mental Health Day 2023.

The First Lady highlighted the importance of acknowledging the emotional toll that contemporary challenges have taken on individuals, particularly the pervasive influence of social media and the resulting emotional and psychological burdens that many now carry. Under the overarching theme of “Mental health is a universal human right,” she passionately implored her fellow countrymen and women to take their mental well-being, as well as that of others, more seriously.

“The challenges of our times have tested our resilience, especially with the ubiquitous presence of social media and the societal pressures that have, in many cases, left individuals grappling with emotional and psychological burdens,” the First Lady emphasized. “It is crucial that we recognize the significance of mental health and take collective action to support those who are affected in one way or another.”

Moreover, First Lady Tinubu underlined the critical role that adults play in supporting the youth, helping them navigate emotional challenges, and fostering healthy relationships.

“As we aspire to build a more promising nation, we must prioritize open and candid conversations with our youth, enabling them to better manage their emotions and expectations. This will ultimately enhance their mental health and boost their overall productivity,” she stated.

In a heartfelt plea, she called upon traditional rulers, religious leaders, non-governmental organizations, and all compassionate Nigerians to join forces with the government in extending concern and support to those who seek help. The First Lady passionately championed the collective creation of a society where mental wellness stands as a priority, ensuring that every individual feels valued and contributes to the nation’s growth.

“Together, we can build a healthier, more compassionate nation for all,” she concluded.

This eloquent message from the First Lady serves as a poignant reminder of the pressing need to address mental health issues within Nigeria, particularly in the context of the 2023 World Mental Health Day. Her call to action resonates not only with Nigerians but also with a global audience, shedding light on the importance of prioritizing mental well-being in today’s increasingly interconnected and digital world. By advocating for these crucial issues, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu sets a remarkable example of leadership in nurturing a society where mental health is treasured and promoted for the benefit of all.
