Government Negligence Hinders Vaccine Production, Heightens Disease Threats, Say Experts

The Nigeria Network of NGOs (NNNGO), in collaboration with The People’s Vaccine (PVA) and Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP), highlights the government’s role in the country’s low vaccine production, posing a risk to disease control efforts.

Medical experts and stakeholders have pointed fingers at the Nigerian government, citing negligence as a key factor contributing to the country’s inadequate vaccine production. This critical issue, brought to light by a joint initiative led by the Nigeria Network of NGOs (NNNGO), The People’s Vaccine (PVA), and Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP), underscores the potential challenges in effectively combating contagious diseases.

The comprehensive report delves into the current state of vaccine production in Nigeria, particularly concerning given the recent surge in disease outbreaks such as malaria, diphtheria, cholera, meningitis, and measles. Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) emphasize that the underfunding and weak infrastructure of public health services nationwide exacerbate the problem, leading to increased inequality.

Oyindamola Aramide, Communications Lead at NNNGOs, emphasized the critical importance of protecting health as a fundamental right, integral to national security and economic growth. The CSOs argue that governments and institutions at all levels must prioritize the health sector to address the pressing issues hindering vaccine production.

Despite the establishment of a vaccine hub by the World Health Organization (WHO) in February 2022, the CSOs lamented the minimal progress made. They emphasize the urgent need for enhanced funding, bolstering national research capabilities, and supporting innovations that facilitate the swift production of life-saving vaccines.

As the threat of infectious diseases looms, the call to action from experts and CSOs echoes the importance of proactive measures to strengthen Nigeria’s vaccine production capabilities, ensuring a robust defense against potential health crises. The government’s commitment to addressing the identified gaps in funding and infrastructure is deemed crucial for safeguarding the well-being of the nation.
