Lagos NMA Advocates for Improved Conditions for Medical Personnel

The Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has raised concerns over the government’s handling of the shortage of doctors and dental practitioners in the state. Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu, the Chairman of the NMA, expressed his dismay in Lagos, emphasizing the dire need for improved working conditions and the provision of medical insurance, especially considering the ever-growing population.

Dr. Olowojebutu did not mince words when accusing the government of shirking its primary responsibilities towards the healthcare sector. He lamented the premature deaths of many doctors under harsh and challenging conditions. One tragic incident that underscored the dangers medical personnel face was the recent loss of Dr. Vwaere Diaso in an elevator mishap at a Lagos General Hospital.

In a fervent call to action, Dr. Olowojebutu urged medical professionals not to accept being treated as “experimental laboratory rats.” He passionately stated, “Truthfully, there is no better time to say enough is enough. Dr. Diaso paid the supreme price of commitment and devotion, and we must make her death count for something – by compelling the government to make significant changes. Accountability is key.”

He went on to highlight the tremendous opportunity that currently exists to rectify the health sector’s deficiencies. Dr. Olowojebutu emphasized that this is the moment for bold action. “However,” he noted, “we must be willing to stretch, leave our shells, and leave no stone unturned. The change we seek is here, but we must be willing to take on the roles of change agents, not mere onlookers.”

The Lagos NMA’s call for improved conditions and better support for medical personnel resonates with many in the healthcare sector. As the debate continues, the hope is that these concerns will lead to concrete actions that ensure the safety and well-being of those who dedicate their lives to the care of others.
