In a resolute proclamation, the Registrar of the Lagos State Traditional Medicine Board, Mr. Babatunde Adele, has championed the pivotal role of traditional medicine in advancing Sustainable Development and Universal Health Coverage.
Speaking at a press conference convened by the LSTMB to commemorate the 2023 African Traditional Medicine Day in Lagos, Adele highlighted the profound reliance on traditional medicine among Africans, asserting that “approximately 80 percent of Africa’s population turn to traditional medicine for their fundamental healthcare requirements.”
He underscored the undeniable significance of traditional medicine as a principal healthcare provider in Africa and Nigeria, emphasizing that its contribution cannot be underestimated.
Revealing the Lagos State Government’s forward-looking initiative, Adele unveiled plans to develop an integrated model of traditional medicine, particularly at the primary healthcare level, designed to address unique healthcare gaps prevalent in the state.
Adele further disclosed a notable reduction in infant and maternal mortality rates attributed to the training and retraining initiatives undertaken by the LSTMB among traditional medicine practitioners.
He declared, “We have reached a critical juncture in our dedicated journey toward achieving parity and recognition akin to that granted to conventional healthcare practitioners and products. Consequently, united efforts are imperative.” He proudly proclaimed Lagos State as a trailblazer in the realm of global best practices in traditional medicine, solidifying its status among the foremost states in the nation in this crucial domain.
